Full course description
This micro-credential course is designed to improve the fraction learning of elementary learners. In the modules, you will gain insight into the research on grades 3-5 learners, deepen your understanding of fraction concepts, and apply research-based strategies to your classroom. The first three modules focus on the knowledge needed to develop a deep understanding of the meaning of fractions, and the last two modules focus on fraction equivalence and fraction comparison. During these five modules, you will analyze early learner work/thinking and view videos of learners and classrooms. A critical component of each module involves applying your learning to your classroom.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn and apply research on elementary student strategies for developing meaning for fractions, including fraction equivalence and fraction comparison.
- Deepen your understanding of fraction meaning, particularly the meaning of the numerator and denominator.
- Analyze early learner written work and videos to determine mathematical strengths and areas for improvement.
- Learn about and implement developmentally appropriate mathematical tasks to deepen early learners' understanding of fractions.
- Learn and apply research-based instructional strategies related to developing meaning for fractions, fraction equivalence, and fraction comparison.
